How I came to Shyrdak
As Cameraman for feature films and documentaries I traveled extensively around the world. I got to know Kyrgyzstan through a documentary film project.
The country, with its warm-hearted people and its vast, largely untouched natural landscape, captivated me. I visited Kyrgyzstan repeatedly and came into contact with the women who make the wonderful shyrdaks.
The idea was quickly born to make this the UNESCO World Heritage Site to distribute the felt carpets in Europe. This will provide the women and their families with additional income.
In many cases this contributes to survival.
Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest countries in the world.
